Personal Branding Photos

Your personal branding photos are more than just nice pictures—they’re a representation of who you are and what you stand for in your business. These photos are an investment, so whether you’re a business owner, a creative professional, or a thought leader, these images set the tone for how others perceive your personal brand.

We all know that what you wear out and about in the world tells your story. So, how do you ensure your branding photo outfits tell the right story and help you shine? In this post, I’m sharing my top outfit ideas and styling tips to help you nail your branding photos with confidence and ease.

1. Start with Your Personal Brand

Before diving into your wardrobe, take a step back and think about your personal brand. Ask yourself these key questions:

What message do I want to convey?

  • Confidence? Approachability? Creativity?

Who is my audience?

  • Are you speaking to corporate professionals, creative entrepreneurs, or a mix of both?

What colors or styles represent my brand?

  • Do you have brand colors or specific tones that align with your website, logo, or marketing materials? Maybe you have branded "merch" you want to wear! Go with what will do the best for YOUR business!

Where will these photos be used?

  • Will they appear on your website, social media, or business cards?

👉 Your answers to these questions will guide your outfit choices to ensure they align with your overall image.

I'll use my own recent branding shoot as an example. I was allowed 3 outfits by the photographer, so it was imperative that I take some time to really craft the vision of what these photos would be. My brand is "Real Style for Real Life", which fits me to a T, so the I wanted to keep the outfits simple and achievable for "real women" but still have an air of elegance and class.

2. Build a Small Capsule Wardrobe for Your Shoot

A small, mix-and-match capsule wardrobe can save you time and stress while giving you flexibility during your photoshoot. Here’s how to build one:

Choose 3-5 Core Pieces

Select versatile staples like:

  • A tailored blazer
  • A classic dress
  • A chic blouse
  • Tailored pants or skirt

Add Layers for Variety

Include jackets, cardigans, or scarves to create multiple looks without needing entirely new outfits.

Your Brand Colors

Incorporate colors that represent your brand or complement your skin tone. Neutrals like white, black, navy, and beige are great for versatility, but don’t shy away from pops of color if they align with your branding.

Pro Tip: Avoid overly busy patterns or loud logos—they can distract from your face in photos.

NOTE: If you wear branded clothing in your work, you may want to include that in a few photos. Again, think about the image you want to convey for your brand, and for yourself as the face of your brand. In my case, I worked very hard on my education through the Global Style Academy, so I wanted to showcase that t-shirt in a few photos as well.

3. Pay Attention to the Details

It’s the little things that can make or break your look in photos. Here’s what to focus on:

Accessories:

  • Opt for simple, elegant pieces like stud earrings, a delicate necklace, or a statement bracelet.
  • Avoid overly chunky or distracting jewelry.

Shoes:

  • Make sure your shoes are polished and complement your outfit.
  • Bring heels, flats, or sneakers based on the vibe you want to convey.

Fit Matters:

  • Well-tailored clothing will always look more polished. If something doesn’t fit quite right, consider getting it altered before your shoot.

Again, for this example, I wear A LOT of blazers when I'm in the field doing styling work. But for my branding photos I desired a bit more elevated version of my standard look, so went with an embellished blazer and an on-trend metallic pant. Would I wear this on a daily basis, probably not. But I would definitely wear this look for a speaking gig, and it is still the basic silhouette and style that presents who I am as a woman and as a personal stylist.

4. Prep Your Outfits for the Photoshoot

Once you’ve chosen your looks, it’s time to prep everything so your shoot day is stress-free.

Press or Steam Your Clothes

Wrinkles will show up in photos, so take the time to steam or press all your outfits.

Lay Out Each Look with Accessories

Organize each outfit with the corresponding jewelry, shoes, and layers. This will help you quickly transition between looks during your session.

Pack Extras

  • Bring alternate pieces, like a second blazer or extra jewelry, in case your photographer or stylist wants to make adjustments.
  • Don’t forget essentials like a lint roller, fashion tape, or safety pins for last-minute fixes!

5. Test Your Outfits Before the Shoot

Try on each outfit in advance and take a quick selfie or mirror photo to see how it looks on camera. Move around, sit, stand, and pose to ensure your clothes fit comfortably and stay in place.

Pro Tip: Ask your stylist for feedback to make sure your outfits align with your brand and photograph well. Most stylists offer photoshoot services, so inquire about that if you need their assistance.

Final Tips for a Successful Photoshoot

Be Comfortable: Choose outfits that make you feel confident and allow you to move naturally.
Consider Hair & Makeup: Professional hair and makeup can elevate your look and ensure you’re camera-ready.
Relax and Have Fun: The best photos happen when you feel confident and relaxed, so don’t forget to enjoy the process!
