As a personal stylist, you might think I have a picture-perfect wardrobe—curated, clutter-free, and filled only with pieces I adore. But when I recently went through my own closet detox, I uncovered some surprising lessons that reminded me just how powerful this process can be.

Today, I’m sharing the 5 biggest lessons I learned from detoxing my own closet. Whether you’re just starting your style journey or you’ve been working on curating your wardrobe for years, these insights can help you create a closet that truly supports the woman you are today.

 

Lesson 1: Style Is a Work in Progress (Even for Stylists!)

Over the past two years, I’ve worked hard to refine my signature style and create a wardrobe that reflects who I am. But guess what? I’m still a work in progress—and that’s okay!

During my detox, I found clothes in my closet that didn’t belong there:

  • Pieces I bought because they were a “good deal” (hello, impulse buys!).
  • Items I thought I might wear but never actually did.

Even though I know better as a professional, it reminded me that curating your personal style is a journey—not a one-time event.

✨ Takeaway: Don’t be hard on yourself if your closet isn’t perfect. Style evolves, and so should your wardrobe.


Lesson 2: The 80/20 Rule is Real

You’ve probably heard of the 80/20 rule—we wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. Well, during my detox, I saw firsthand just how true that is!

What surprised me most?
When I let go of that 80% of clothes I wasn’t wearing, I actually felt like I had more outfit options, not fewer.

When your closet is filled only with pieces you love and wear, outfit creation becomes easier. Fewer distractions = more clarity.

Lesson 3: Archiving Clothes Can Be a Powerful Motivator

This lesson was personal—and emotional.

I had several pieces in my wardrobe that no longer fit me. Instead of facing the guilt of seeing them every day, I decided to archive those items. I packed them away in a labeled bin and stored them out of sight.

Here’s what happened:

  • Less Guilt: I wasn’t constantly reminded of what didn’t fit.
  • More Motivation: Knowing those pieces were waiting for me motivated me to stay committed to my health journey.

✨ Takeaway: If certain pieces make you feel discouraged, consider archiving them instead of letting them occupy your daily space.


Lesson 4: Community Makes a Huge Difference

This one was such a beautiful reminder during my recent Closet Detox Bootcamp.

Going through my own closet alongside my community of boot campers showed me how much support matters when you’re doing personal growth work.

âś… Old cosmetics past their expiration date.
âś… Home décor pieces that no longer matched my style.
